Amateur radio ("ham radio") is a hobby of many barbershoppers through its history. Individual licensed hams could contact each other directly across long distances without the cost or infrastructure required for landline communication. In the early 1990s, special radio stations were set up at conventions to connect hams who could not attend the convention with those that did.
