About
Since the first convention of Barbershop Harmony Australia in 1991, formerly known as the Australian Association of Men's Barbershop Singers (AAMBS), there has been a quartet crowned at each convention.
The rule for whether a quartet can compete in a future convention after winning gold medals has had a long history. From 1991 - 1999 the quartets who won the AAMBS gold medal were unable to recompete in the national competition and were retired in the style of the BHS. In 1999 this rule was abolished and quartets were able to compete at subsequent competitions. In 2015 Barbershop Harmony Australia transitioned from biennial to annual conventions. It was decided at this time that winning quartets would have to stand down for a year before returning to competition (this explains the Lockout / Blindside pattern from 2015-2018). When a change in the constitution to allowed for membership to be gender-blind, new contest categories were created, and the stand down rule was removed.[1] The stand-down rule was re-implemented in 2024.[2]
Australia has proudly produced one international gold medal singer in John Newell. Newell won the BHS Quartet Gold Medal in 2005 with Realtime who are widely considered one of the best singing quartets in BHS history. At the international competition only one BHA quartet has received a medal to date. Blindside has medalled twice in the Collegiate/Youth competition receiving a 4th and a 3rd place bronze medal in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
