Quarter-Finals
- 1 round, 160 points
- In 1989-97, the first round was basically an elimination round, with each judge awarding a letter score, which was converted to a number (maximum 10 points per song per judge - A+ = 10 pts, A = 9, A- = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, B- = 5, etc). So the maximum number of points possible in the quarterfinals was 160.
